Its a very solid recorder, but it has a few drawbacks of its own. I think the input stage is superior to the H4n, and about on par with D50, although the D50 doesn't have xlrs.

The menu system is a little fiddly and it takes 8(!) AA batteries or AC power. Its not very power efficient, Its about 3x the size of the handhelds (maybe 4x) and of course it has no built in mics.

With that said, The HDP2 sounds better than the H4n and the DR-100 IMO and serves its purpose well. Its really apples and oranges though, as these handhelds are more about on the fly recordings and the HDP2 is better served in contexts where the recording is a little more staged.Renehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14936940997463976253noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9153852528948975456.post-27901015896858765832011-02-08T00:57:14.818-06:002011-02-08T00:57:14.818-06:00Thanks for taking the time to make this excellent ...Thanks for taking the time to make this excellent comparison!!

I have a parting question...

You've deemed the H4n the best of the three, but how does it compare to slightly better field recorders?

I'm considering upgrading from my H4n to the Tascam HD-P2. It's no Sound Design, but do you think the HD-P2 will provide a significant improvement in sound quality over the H4n?

Thanks!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
